Jeff LaLande discusses the reasons for the 160-year-long history of proposed secession movements to separate Southern Oregon and to form a new state with Northern California. Dr. LaLande earned a Ph.D. in history from the University of Oregon. He retired from a career as archaeologist and historian with the U.S. Forest Service.
Presentation by Ron Millar. Atheists and humanists can – and must – be engaged in the political and electoral process. Mr. Millar explores the activities that are allowable and encourages our members to become even more active in this arena. Ron Millar is the Political and PAC Coordinator at the Center for Freethought Equality. He researches and interviews political candidates for possible endorsement by the Freethought Equality Fund PAC. He has a PhD from Virginia Tech.
Presentation by two librarians. Shannon Sedell and Chris Myers provide an overview of resources and tactics for getting the most out of our public library during the COVID crisis. This includes downloadable books, online databases, streaming video, and more. Shannon Sedell and Chris Myers are librarians at Lake Oswego Public Library. Shannon has a bachelor’s degree in Art History and Chris has a master’s degree in Library Science.
Deon Strommer presents a talk on disaster recovery. He speaks of his experience with the National Disaster Medical System in February 2020 to help contain the Corona Virus, to assist with quarantining of U.S. citizens arriving from Wuhan, China, and to help in the care of people who died from the virus. In mid-May he returned to Oregon to assist state agencies in preparing for a possible second wave of the virus this Fall. Mr. Strommer is a Funeral Director and owner of First Call Mortuary Services in Portland.
