Presentation by Gordon Walker. Speculation that there may be many other Earths and solar systems in the Universe goes back to the time of the Greeks and has posed serious challenges to religious belief. Within the last fifty years, astronomers have developed techniques sensitive enough to put that speculation to the test. We now have evidence for thousands of extra-solar planets in our galaxy and of conditions suitable for life on these planets. Gordon Walker holds a Ph.D. in astrophysics from Cambridge University and is Professor Emeritus at the University of British Columbia. His laboratory has produced some of the first digital detection systems for space based telescopes.
Portland’s Homeless Crisis is about much more than just shelter. In this presentation, Andy Goebel tells the story of “All Good Northwest” – an organization fostering communities for individuals impacted by housing insecurity -- including support services at all levels. Mr. Goebel helped found Portsmouth Union Church — a progressive and inclusive congregation that has hosted shelters for people experiencing houselessness. He has also served as Director of Emergency Management for “Do Good Multnomah”, a support group for homeless veterans.
