By the start of the 21st century it had gained a reputation as one of the nation’s most hip and trendy cities. What happened and why? This presentation highlights changes in the city’s politics, arts, and public culture. Abbott taught Urban Studies and Planning at Portland State University before retiring a few years ago. He is the author of more than a dozen books about the history of cities, city planning, and science fiction,
