Biological Stuff
04/22/2012
Dr. Duane Ray

This is Part 4 of a 5-part science series prepared by Dr. Duane Ray. “We build on our knowledge of DNA, epigenetics, and molecular interactions to look at some amazing new developments in biology. The application of new biological understanding has led to big changes in the way we produce our food, treat our illnesses, and even produce our energy. Genetic engineering and stem cell work have expanded dramatically in the last few years. Ethical concerns lead to emotional discussions. The potential benefits for everyone drive the research forward. As we learn more about each of these areas, we have a better foundation for understanding the headlines.”

Dark Matter
04/08/2012
Dr. Duane Ray

This is Part 3 of a 5-part science series prepared by Dr. Duane Ray. “There is five times as much ‘dark’ matter as there is matter from which the stars, the planets and we are made. It’s dark and we can’t see it, so how do we even know it’s there? What do we know of this mysterious stuff? How do we study it and what have we learned about it? Difficult experiments are starting to give results. This talk gives a historical and scientific background and tell you what to look for in the near future.”

Marriage Equality
03/18/2012
Mike Grigsby

Mike Grigsby, field organizer for Basic Rights Oregon speaks to us about the work of Basic Rights Oregon (BRO), and its program for marriage equality -- the freedom for an adult to marry whomever he/she chooses, regardless of gender. Mike addresses such questions as: What is the recent history of marriage equality in Oregon? Why was the decision made not to put it on the ballot at this time? What's happening in other states, and what impact does that have for Oregon? What do the terms civil union and domestic partnership mean, and how do they differ from marriage? What are the top 5 myths about marriage equality? How should we respond to those who use the bible to support the Defense of Marriage Act which defines marriage as the legal union of one man and one woman? BRO's mission is to ensure that all lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender Oregonians experience equality by building a broad and inclusive politically powerful movement, by shifting public opinion, and by achieving policy victories.
